Position:  DIRECTOR, SOLAR ARRAY PRODUCTS
Location: DRT, San Diego

 
The Director of Solar Array Products is responsible for transitioning solar array technology developed in the SPOT Business Area into production level of flight qualified advanced solar panel and solar array subsystems. The Director -

  • Has P&L responsibility for solar panel and solar array flight products
  • Oversees the marketing activity to develop the customer and program base for SPOT’s solar panel and solar array technology
  • Develops and manages key teammates and subcontractors for supporting marketing, proposal and production efforts
  • Grows and manages the Solar Array Products group within SPOT, including developing the personnel plan, hiring and maintaining key personnel for engineering, production and line management functions
  • Develops and manages a world-class solar panel integration facility
  • Oversees the production and delivery of quality end items to the customers.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Responsible for solar array group strategic planning documents – Marketing Plan, Capex/Facility Plan, Personnel Plan, and Program Management & Execution Plan, Quality Assurance / Continuous Improvement, and others as required
  • Provides input to SPOT’s R&D plan to direct technology development to support enhanced marketability and performance of the solar panel and solar array products – provides the approach for transitioning technology to production including oversight on qualification plans and manufacturing and test plans.
  • Assures that program cost, schedule, and technical requirements are managed by the PM’s in compliance with company standards to insure that customer requirements are met.
  • Serve as a high visibility focal point for customers and for establishing a rapport of trust and understanding between DR and its customers.
  • Work with customers to determine needs, requirements, and solutions for new research and development opportunities including pursuit team leadership and management.
  • Ensure all resources such as engineering, manpower, facilities, equipment, tools, etc. are available for successful program execution.
  • Establish strategic relationships with customers, suppliers and key business partners to strengthen business opportunities with customers.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of spacecraft solar array subsystem designs, manufacturing and markets.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, the competitive environment including marketing strategies and pricing
  • Ability to set up, manage and execute applied spacecraft quality production line.
  • Strong history of effective leadership through communicating, motivating, inspiring, and rewarding individuals and teams.
  • Successful track record of managing a multi-$M Business Area, to meet objectives including, bookings, sales, schedule, quality, and customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience in leading and managing pursuits and proposals for large, complex programs.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with customers, large prime contractors, suppliers, business partners, in addition to company senior management.

Education/Experience:

Position: PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR

Location: San Diego, CA

The Principal Investigator is responsible for bidding, winning and executing research and development programs that advance the component and subsystem technologies consistent with the Space Power, Optics and Thermal Products Business Area goals and strategies. The PI also acts as a program manager for R&D and pilot production programs, managing the cost, schedule, and technical execution from inception to completion. This position is responsible for all essential technical and programmatic functions. Technical functions include performance of tradeoffs and conceptual designs, defining and monitoring the work of support engineering design and analysis personnel, defining and monitoring demonstration hardware builds and testing, and preparing technical documentation. Programmatic functions include estimation of the scope of effort and associated proposal preparation, preparation of a program plan including the project schedule and budgets, assessing program risks and implementing appropriate risk mitigations, serving as the primary contact to the customer, preparing and leading customer briefings, and developing follow-on business opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of spacecraft components and subsystems, and the role of composite materials in them.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software, such as MS Office.
  • Familiarity with research and development techniques such as monte-carlo simulation or other modeling, design of experiment, qualification testing and traceability, and performance and environmental durability test approaches.
  • Ability to set up, manage and execute applied research programs developing components and subsystems, and transitioning the technology into practical producible products.
  • Strong history of effective leadership through communicating, motivating, inspiring, and rewarding individuals and teams.
  • Successful track record of managing complex programs and meeting all program objectives including cost, schedule, quality, and customer satisfaction.

Position: ENGINEER, SOLAR ARRAY

Location: San Diego, CA DRT

The position of Engineer, Solar Array Products involves responsibility for engineering flight quality, reliable and cost effective solar panels for flight spacecraft, drawing upon heritage technology while incorporating enhancements from solar array technology developed in the SPOT Business Area. The Engineer -

  • Has full responsibility for solar panel, solar concentrator and solar array flight product system engineering, mechanical design & analysis, electrical design & analysis, thermal analysis, materials & processes engineering, and manufacturing engineering, with capabilities to perform and oversee these functions.
  • Acts as engineering liaison to the program office, the manufacturing group, program control, configuration and data management, quality engineering, and test group.
  • Identifies and baselines solar array products engineering technology, and develops plans for advanced research and development for improving cost and performance factors
  • Oversees, from an engineering perspective, the production and delivery of quality end items to the customers.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Performs solar cell layout, and BOL/EOL analysis for photovoltaic solar panels
  • Prepares engineering plans for meeting customer design-to-spec or build-to-print requirements.
  • Prepares documentation and review material for solar panel engineering tasks, including reports, Preliminary Design Reviews, Critical Design Reviews, Manufacturing Readiness Review, Tooling Design Reviews, Test Readiness Reviews, etc.
  • Assures that engineering cost, schedule, and technical requirements are met.
  • Serve as the technical focal point for customers and for establishing a technical relationship between DR and its customers and suppliers that shows compliance to requirements and an ability to concurrently engineer the solar array products.
  • Work with customers to determine needs, requirements, and solutions for new production sales, as well as research and development opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of spacecraft solar power subsystem designs, qualification approaches, manufacturing technology and test approaches.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, the spacecraft life environment including launch vehicle and space environment requirements and effects
  • Capabilities in relevant computer design and analysis software.
  • Successful track record of engineering and fielding spacecraft flight hardware.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience of standards and specifications used in solar array product manufacture.

  • Minimum 8 years relevant experience in a program team environment on commercial firm-fixed and government cost-plus programs and aerospace hardware.
  • Strong history of effective leadership through communicating, motivating, inspiring, and rewarding individuals and teams.
  • Successful track record of managing complex programs and meeting all program objectives including cost, schedule, quality, and customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience in leading and managing pursuits and proposals for large, complex programs.

Position: QUALITY ENGINEER

Location: San Diego, CA Vanguard Composites Group, Inc.

Position Summary:

Will be required to apply and maintain standards for quality operating methods, processes, systems and procedures and be able to modify and implement change as necessary. Ensure that corrective measures meet standards and contract requirements and objectives. Review periodic defect summaries, quality trend analyses, and related QA data. Maintain liaison with mfg, engineering, material management, vendor and customer personnel to resolve quality problems.

Qualifications:

  • Detail oriented to accurately prepare statistical reports, specifications, procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Experienced with composite manufacturing, including layup, assembly, oven cures and testing.
  • Experienced in GD&T, drawing interpretations and tolerances.
  • Capable of representing the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues with the ability to lead a team including moderately experienced exempt employees on a single component project.
  • Have a good understanding of ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems Requirements.
  • Good interpersonal skills and both written and verbal communication abilities that enable effective interface with inter-organizational staff, outside customers and regulatory personnel.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Review design documents such as drawings, specifications, test plans/procedures, work instructions, SOW’s, etc. to verify adequate acceptance requirements have been included.
  • Generate Nonconformance Reports.
  • Applies statistical process control (SPC) methods for analyzing data to evaluate the current process and process changes.
  • Review purchase requests and provides the adequate quality requirements.
  • Documents data obtained during all quality assurance activities, consistent with company policies and procedures. Assists in generation of End Item Data Packs.
  • Communicates significant issues or developments identified during quality assurance activities and provides recommended process improvements to management.
  • Prepares and presents technical and program information to team members and management.
  • Ability to deliver effective technical presentations.

Education/Experience:

  • A Bachelor degree or related technical field with at least six (6) years of related experience, or may substitute ten (10) or more years of Quality.
  • Assurance/Quality Control experience in similar environment.
  • Able to read and understand mechanical drawings using ASME Y14.5.
  • Ability to apply a basic knowledge of inspection requirements.
  • MRB authorization and six years of inspection experience related to structures and systems assembly a significant plus.
  • Prefer a background in Quality Systems (ISO/AS9100), Policies, parts inspection and records retention, ability to work in a team environment, be resourceful, and able to work with minimal direction.
